The moment those questioning Barack Obama’s citizenship were given the collective name “birthers” was the moment their cause was pretty much over. A few people asking a common sense question is just that while a subgroup asking that question can be presented as some fringe cult to be exploited.
Once that happened with birthers all Democrats had to ask of Republicans is, “Do you support such fringe thinking?” They then could use any moment of hesitation as evidence of association. Republicans have no choice now but to expunge birthers and join in the ritualistic kill. (Want to know WTH I am talking about? See Burke: The Rhetoric of Hitler’s Battle)
Now as to the actual issue. I find it interesting that Obama could have cleared this entire thing up very easily by just asking for the release of his certificate. I also completely understand why he wouldn’t. Better to let the cult of the kill take over and score some political points by turning anyone who even asks the simple question into a right wing lunatic scorned by the media. So, in short, there is no incentive to release the certificate when you can turn the very question into a mark of insanity.
Beyond the simply question, I honestly could care less about the issue and see no political advantage for any Republican to use an ounce of capital to push it. If Obama was not born in the United States, it is kind of late now. The man is commanding our military forces and has spent the future earnings of several generations in just the first few months of his term. So if he wasn’t born in the US we all look pretty stupid now anyway. Also if he wasn’t born in the United States the left has made those questioning look so radically unstable that few would believe any “evidence” presented to contradict the story. There is no way to win for birthers and no way for Obama to lose on this issue.
Do I personally believe he was born in the US of A? Yes! I have only the absence of evidence as evidence and that is not enough. Almost every aspect of Obama’s life is sketchy and seems to lead back to rampant socialism and shady characters. His birth is, frankly, the least of our worries and the least sketchy thing about his life. A childhood spent being groomed by communists and the majority of his life spent with radical anti-American extremists leads to far more imaginative questions than not seeing the actual birth certificate.
So to sum up, I believe we have far more to worry about at this point and think Obama and the Democrats gain by letting the issue linger. I don’t think it is any mark of insanity to ask the question and expect that of the miniscule list of requirements to become President, an actual birth certificate be presented. While I may joke about it, I don’t in all honesty believe Obama was born outside the United States. Born to a couple of Russian speaking socialists? Yes. Outside of the United States? No!
