I keep reading about the Obama vacations and the comments of outrage and I cannot help but feel bored by it all. Yes Obama takes a lot of vacations, especially considering the amount of time Democrats spent portraying President Bush as lazy and Obama as a tireless workhorse. At the same time, whenever Obama actually does work things fall apart. So the more vacation time the better.
It does drive me batty knowing that we pay Congress a full years salary for basically four months of work. Once again, that four months packs an enormous amount of wrong. I just wish they were paid less and when that happens they would take off even more time.
Let me be clear, I think it is a sham that Obama and our elected officials romp on our dime. Where I differ is having any qualms with them romping. I am afterall a proponent of limited government. As such I would be perfectly happy if Congress were only in session a few weeks out of the year. It would be nice if we elected these people to occasionally get together, work out some problems and then go back home to do real work.
The bureaucracy largely runs itself. Senators don’t need to be in house to guarantee Social Security checks are sent. Representatives are absolutely non-essential when we are fighting a war.
When you hear people say things like, “Congress needs to go to work” or “The President should be doing his job” it usually comes from people who have no idea of what either is supposed to be doing. Meaning they haven’t read the Constitution. They would like Government to spend more time doing things it isn’t supposed to do.
The most frequent? “The President should be spending more time creating jobs!” I have news for you, the President is now largely responsible for us losing jobs. It was all the “work” he did in the first six months and all the work he did in Congress before that which lead us here. Government isn’t supposed to be trying to create jobs. It is the job of Government to stay the hell out of the way so that can happen. The more he works to do anything other than remove the job he did before, the less jobs we will have.
If Congress and the President are going to spend their time on anything other than shrinking government, they need to stay on vacation or just stay home. A “Do Nothing Congress” as the left calls it is exactly what we need right now!
