New York Republican Congressional Candidates on SCOTUS & Repealing Obamacare

In the wake of today’s Supreme Court ruling on the constitutionality of Obamacare several 2012 New York Congressional candidates made statements. Below is a collection of those statements. In addition I have put together a list of where each candidate stands on Obamacare and if they have committed to repealing the legislation.

Repeal of this disastrous legislation should be priority number one for every voter.

New York 1st Randy Altschuler
Supports full repeal

New York 3rd Stephen A Labate
Will vote for a full repeal of Obamacare

New York 4th Francis Becker
Plans to vote for a full repeal of Obamacare

“Troubling ruling from the Supreme Court today. This raises stakes in the November Election. The Court upheld the individual mandate as a tax which means Carolyn McCarthy voted for one of the largest tax increases in American History.”

New York 11th Michael Grimm
Will repeal and replace Obamacare

New York 12th Christipher Wright

New York 17th Joe Carvin

Appears to be against the legislation but does not have a clear statement that he supports repeal.

New York 18th Nan Hayworth
Committed to Repeal

“Today’s Supreme Court decision does not change the fact that the massive 2010 government health care takeover harms, rather than helps, our patients, doctors, hospitals, and other providers. It imposes nearly $2 trillion worth of bureaucracy and excessive regulation; it has caused health insurance premiums to increase for families struggling to make ends meet; and it raises taxes at a time when we should be lowering them.”

“Instead, we need to put the patient, not the government, at the center of our health care. We must have a better plan to assure that all Americans have affordable, portable health insurance and consistent access to good care, and to enable every American to benefit from the quality, innovation, and choice that have made our health care the best in the world.”

“I will continue to apply the knowledge I’ve gained in medical practice and as the Representative for the Hudson Valley to repeal the 2010 law and pass common-sense, consumer-driven reforms that will free our patients and their families to make their own decisions about their health care; free our doctors, hospitals, and other providers to do their best without being tied up in government red tape; and free our innovators to create the advances that will help all of us to live longer, healthier lives.”

New York 19th Chris Gibson
Previously voted to repeal Obamacare.

New York 21st Matt Doheny
Committed to repealing Obamacare

“The Supreme Court today ruled that Bill Owens and Barack Obama helped passed one of the largest – if not the largest – tax increases in American history.

“The partisan ObamaCare bill has been, and will continue to be, a nightmare for the average upstate New Yorker.

“My opponent has left behind a string of broken promises. He said ObamaCare would pay for itself. It doesn’t. He said it would protect Medicare for seniors. It doesn’t. He said it would allow ordinary Americans to keep the health care plan they like. It doesn’t.

“And, the Supreme Court says it is constitutional under Congress’ ability to tax – making it a tax increase.

“ObamaCare has convinced job creators to stand on the sidelines, which has lead to our jobless recovery and kept our economy teetering on the brink of another recession.

“Americans know this bill is bad for our country. We must repeal this bill and that’s what I’ll do to put America back to work.”

New York 23rd Tom Reed
Committed to repealing Obamacare

“I respect the Supreme Court’s decision to essentially uphold Obamacare, but I am very troubled by the ramifications. This decision greatly expands the government’s ability to tax and interfere in people’s lives. This is bad news for patients, taxpayers and the economy.

“Health care premiums continue to rise at a rate much higher than inflation and the mandates of the act are having a chilling impact on job creation. Businesses legitimately fear anticipated cost increases when the law is fully implemented next year. We need to fully repeal the Affordable Care Act.

“The reality is that as the law stands, Obamacare will cost trillions and will be paid for by billions in tax increases and a $500 billion reduction in funding for Medicare.

“I will continue to work to repeal this law. What we need to do is carry forward with patient-centered reforms such as requiring coverage for pre-existing conditions, allowing children up to age 26 to be carried on a parent’s policy, and covering preventive health care services like mammograms for women.

“The nation will have to make a decision at the polls this November regarding what direction to go. People will need to choose between repealing Obamacare or continuing to a future of massive tax increases on individuals and businesses and a significantly larger, more invasive government. I believe in individual choice and empowering patients rather than health care by unaccountable bureaucrats or administrators.”

New York 24th Anne Marie Buerkle
Committed to repealing Obamacare

“Today, the Supreme Court ruled to uphold the majority of President Obama’s healthcare law.  Throughout this entire process my concern has always been to ensure that all Americans have access to quality and affordable healthcare and that the sanctity of the doctor/patient relationship is upheld.  I have spent most of my professional life in healthcare, first as a nurse and later as a healthcare attorney.  I understand how important of an issue this is for all Americans. I am currently reviewing the Supreme Court decision in its entirety to determine its impact on the people, hospitals, and businesses in my district.”

New York 25th Maggie Brooks
Committed to repealing Obamacare

“The Supreme Court’s decision today made clear that the Obamacare Individual Mandate is a colossal new tax to be levied on the American people, one which will cost taxpayers trillions of dollars for years to come. Regardless of the law’s constitutionality, our families and seniors deserve better. Furthermore, I remain deeply concerned about the exploding debt and runaway spending that the current failed system in Washington will hand down to future generations of Americans. That’s why I strongly believe that Congress must remain committed to repealing Obamacare and the massive tax hike it places on everyday taxpayers and their families.”

“As then Chair of the Rules Committee, Louise Slaughter played a key role in forcing this massive tax hike though Congress, quashing any attempts to debate the bill on its many failings. Although the passage of Obamacare represented Washington dysfunction at its worst, I strongly believe that we now have an opportunity show America at its best. With the continued support of local voters, I look forward to working collaboratively in Congress to replace Obamacare with real reform that best serves American families, while protecting taxpayers.”

New York 27th Chris Collins
Committed to repealing Obamacare.

“Today, the Supreme Court confirmed what small businesses and voters have been saying for a long time – plain and simple, this is a massive tax imposed by Barack Obama Democrats like Kathy Hochul on the American people. Because of the Obama-Hochul Tax, our economy is broken, we are losing jobs, and our children are being saddled with debt they can’t afford,” said Collins.

The Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision, upheld the ObamaCare law, citing Congress power to levy taxes under Article I of the Constitution, with Chief Justice John Roberts writing in the majority opinion that “that the individual mandate must be construed as imposing a tax…”

“This is a massive tax on the residents of the 27th District.  And when I go to Congress, my first order of business will be to lead the fight to repeal ObamaCare and replace it with common sense solutions that protect seniors and don’t crush small businesses and cost us jobs,” said Collins.

Under the Obama-Hochul Plan, families and small businesses will see their taxes increase drastically.  For example, young families under the age of 35 will pay $504 more per year under ObamaCare.

(Carla K. Johnson, “Health Premiums May Rise 17% For Young Adults Buying Own Insurance,” Associated Press, 3/29/2010).

Over the next 10 years, the ObamaCare plan supported by Kathy Hochul will increase taxes on each taxpayer in our district by more than $12,000.  A family of four in the 27th Congressional District would see an increase of $2,400 per year in new taxes because of ObamaCare.

(Phillip Klein, “CBO: ObamaCare to Cost $1.76 Trillion Over 10 Years,” The Washington Examiner, 3/13/2012; David S. Logan, “Summary of Latest Federal Individual Income Tax Data,” The Tax Foundation, 10/24/2011)

“ObamaCare will cost us more than half a trillion in new taxes – more than 1,200 for every hard-working taxpayer in our district.  We can’t afford these new taxes to pay for a plan which is crushing our economy, costing us jobs and saddling our children with over $2 trillion in unaffordable debt,” said Collins.

“And, this doesn’t include the $500 billion in Medicare funding ObamaCare slashed for our seniors, or the complete decimation of Medicare Advantage, which tens of thousands of seniors in our district rely on,” said Collins.

“Kathy Hochul broke her promise to us.  And unlike Kathy Hochul, I’ll actually keep my word and fight for seniors in Congress.  That starts with repealing ObamaCare, protecting Medicare Advantage, and eliminating these crushing taxes which are weakening our economy and costing us jobs,” said Collins.
