Don’t Trust Politicians

I love politics, I loath politicians.

I’ve had a little fun over the last few days breaking the balls of a Democrat whose love of a politician, in my opinion, clouded his judgement. From the moment Congressman Eric Massa stepped down amid allegations of sexual harrasment, something did not add up. When Massa went from zero to sixty on the scale of humbled concession to outraged victimization and as he began spewing venom toward his own Party, the credibility of his claims that he was simply leaving for health and the toll an investigation would take on his family became less believable. As the logic was sucked out of the story, the Democrat whose balls I was breaking began attacking anyone and everyone who dared point it out. His love of Massa’s politics and feelings of personal connection to the candidate made him lose any sense of reason. He too began spiraling into his own sideshow of weird logic and outrage, mirroring Massa’s.

Last night the story developed further as now former Congressman Massa appeared on Glenn Beck. An hour of rambling, silky jokes, staged talking points and further destruction of the logic in his decision making and erosion of his timelines, served only to destroy what little credibility Massa had left.

Falling in love with a politician, regardless of their Party, will only end in heartbreak.

Democrats are waking up to this point thanks to an Obama administration that is anything but what they voted for. Local Democrats who pumped their heart and soul into Eric Massa’s campaign are watching their time, energy and dedication squandered. Republicans just had a twelve year example with Bush, McCain and the Republican lead Congress and every day there is another story that should make us seriously doubt the crop of 2012 Republican presidential candidates.

Yet I continue to see followers of both parties give up logic, reason and decency to defend their love of politicians. They give them heart and soul and receive little in return. If we want true change, if we seek better leaders, we must replace lust with skepticism, affection with stone cold accountability and love with the constant threat of rebellion.

Politicians are not rock stars or Gods, they are elected representatives of the people. We give them a great deal of wealth and power in their work but should give them neither as reward for their service. The work is their reward! As temporary public servants who believe in our nation, they should require no other. We need to begin treating these offices and their occupants in a way that they should expect and assume no other reward will come.

The issue is not campaign finance or special interest but a nation that can be largely divided between those who don’t care enough to vote and those who vote caring too much about superficial things that continually pair them to the wrong political mate. It is one thing to excitingly support a representative of one’s ideology and another to ruthlessly ignore their clearly visible flaws and corruption just to advance that ideology and cling to sentiment for the politician. This process leads to temporary advance but long term defeat.

There are few politicians deserving of God-like worship. Washington, Jefferson, Reagan, Jackson, Lincoln. We easily recognize their greatness but know they too were flawed and made plenty of mistakes. They were not dietys just the closest thing we have had on Earth. We long to add to the list of dynamic leaders so much that severly flawed men like John Kennedy become whitewashed and distorted while lesser personalities who are technically more deserving leaders like Calvin Coolidge are ignored.

In short my message is simple, stop looking for love in politicians, you will only be let down. Don’t trust them either, not with your continued money, time or energy. Not unless or until they show you, repeatedly, they are deserving of it and even then only give with hesitancy and skepticism! They will fail you and the country but you owe them little when they do. They are replaceable and should be treated as such and defended only when they are truly deserving both as leaders and human beings.

RNC and Steele Are Living Large On Your Dime

Yesterday I lamented the lack of faith I have in the current class of clowns we have headlining the Republican Party. If you thought I was in any way harsh or just being down, check out the latest from our worthless leader Michael Steele. Not only is he using his time to promote his book, he and the RNC are taking donations and living large!

From Politico::

Just last week, RNC officials touted a January fundraising haul of more than $10 million. But after hosting the sun-filled winter meeting in Hawaii, paying for the holiday party and taking care of other bills, the committee spent almost all of it. Consequently, the RNC added only $1 million to the committee’s $8.4 million in cash, the reports show…

The RNC’s fundraising problems could have real consequences in the fall, since the RNC typically acts as a bank in midterms, swooping in to help cash-strapped candidates. It also is responsible for running the party’s vaunted 72-hour get-out-the-vote program…

The 2005 committee spent $1.35 million on lodging, compared with $1.5 million last year. The locations also improved. There were overnights at Ritz-Carlton hotels in Chicago, Denver, Marina del Rey, Westchester and Boston. The committee dropped $8,000 for two stays at Hotel Vitale, which boasts panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay.

RNC meal costs are among the categories that saw the biggest increases under Steele’s leadership. In Beverly Hills, Calif., the RNC spent $10,600 on food and lodging for a fundraiser featuring former Speaker Newt Gingrich at Spago, the flagship restaurant of the Wolfgang Puck Fine Dining Group. In total, the Wolfgang Puck enterprise has collected more than $94,000 from the RNC for catering services, compared with zero dollars in 2005.

“It’s symbolic of the way they are looking at the building and the way they are spending money,” said one donor. “It’s a culture. During the Bush administration, Karl Rove would bitch if there were flowers on the tables.”

Nothing makes the conservative fiscal message sparkle more than a private jet and fresh flowers!

The cost of doing business

There are many reasons jobs have not returned to our economy, let me give you one that also highlights the disconnect between socialist liberals and capitalist conservatives, it involves bank fees and bailouts.

When TARP was first proposed our leaders all but guaranteed we would see our money returned. Some also suggested the American people would be rewarded with a return on investment! Actually the New York Times touted we already had started rolling in the dough. (Their only caveat? Oh yeah,”American International Group, the mortgage finance companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and” our other bailouts “the automakers General Motors and Chrysler” but that is splitting hairs, really)

Yes, some of the financial institutions have repaid bailout money with interest, giving the impression the plan worked and the banks were saved. One could just assume new business had been found and the world was right again! What really happened and what is occurring across the entire financial system, is that consumers are paying higher fees and higher interest on the accounts they already have! (Want stock, or assets, they have fees for those too, more on that in a minute!)

How did companies like CITI pay off their government loans?

Let me break the process down:

Step 1) Fired lots of people
Step 2) Sold lots of assets
Step 3) Raised the cost of services by charging fees
Step 4) Watched their stock price go up
Step 5) Attached some fees for preferred stock sales (The kind of stock the gov was given)
Step 6) Borrowed money from FED at a very low interest rate (They did this before the collapse too)
Step 7) Raised the interest rates on consumers to a very high level
Step 8) Troubled assets? What troubled assets? They pretty much ignored them because the Gov will always be there to help
Step 9) Repaid the loans

It gets better!

Step 10) Government releases preferred shares for sale so Gov can profit!
Step 11) Would try and buy back own preferred stock for less than it was worth. When government wouldn’t take, they have just been waiting them out
Step 12) Charged a fee for the sale of the stock the Gov released
Step 13) CHARGED THEMSELVES that fee
Step 14) Claimed those fees as revenue and will pay all their top people bonuses on said revenue and be sure NOT to hire anyone back
Step 15) Just for the heck of it, they started charging even higher interest rates and fees. What will people do? Go to another financial?

The consumer and the worker ultimately pay the price when government becomes intwined with business. Workers are downsized or face steep pay cuts while consumers have the new cost of business passed onto them with a rise in the price of goods and services. Each feed the other; less people consuming results in more job losses, leads to further loss of consumption, then even more job loss.

The “Law of Unintended Consequences” always applies to government endeavors. Every solution creates more problems.

When government first proposed that TARP funds would be returned with interest, they explained taxpayers would buy bad assets to clean up the books of the financials. This made almost no sense, what would taxpayers want with bad assets? It made no sense for financials either, how did they really know which assets were “troubled” and what if the “troubled” assets actually turned out to be worth something later on?

So plan two was for government to take ownership of stock. Government owning stock gave an almost seal of approval for other potential buyers. The same kind of seal that came with government giving the perception that it would bail out mortgages. This lead to financials buying other financials, especially Chinese, that helped raise the stock price. See how this works?

Financials haven’t found new business, they haven’t originated new loans, they haven’t truly resolved what to do with troubled assets, they haven’t changed their behavior. They just raised their stock price utilizing the same bad business practices that lead them to ruin in the first place. The consumer and the taxpayer paid an enormous amount of money to lose their jobs and pay more fees.

The citizen is the consumer and the employee. We can no longer pretend that there is some cabal of “rich” we can tax or nickel and dime, we are only punishing ourselves. When the government took ownership of financial institutions it guaranteed the American people an actual investment in something we little understood. We have now created a system where “too big to fail” is literal. If the financials go under, we lose our investment. The only way to either regain or profit from our investment is to raise the cost of doing business on ourselves.

We had to accept major layoffs for the financials to survive. We have to pay enormous fees in order to pay ourselves back the money we leant. We need the financials to raise their stock price in order to make money on our investment. We own these financials and the only way for the collective to profit is for the collective to go bankrupt.

This relationship is not incestuous but cannibalistic. We are eating our own bodies, consuming our own fat to survive and worse, accelerating the process to feed our own unquenching hunger for what we perceive as “fairness” and “justice” and “security.”

This entire process has been furthered by terrible legislation like Sarbanes Oxley passed under the guise of protection and security for consumers and workers. SOX contained new accounting rules for investment that are so strict, it has killed investment within the United States. The government is guaranteeing more involvement in tax preparation this year and demanding further accountability as it chases the boogeyman of corporate greed. A large percentage of the public and most of our government actually demand the actions that result in rising unemployment. The crusade will further raise the cost of doing business and further the cycle of job losses and rising prices. It will also further kill innovation and guarantee foreign investment at the expense of domestic growth.

I was against TARP and the bailouts from the moment I understood what they were, giving the money of all to some, specifically the people who helped create this terrible system in the first place.

Personally I want financials to succeed but I understood then, as I know now, that capitalism must be allowed to prevail. That means letting the weak die. TARP is not capitalism, it isn’t even socialism. The economic system it most closely aligns itself to is fascism. Government doesn’t want to run the means of production in our current system, it simply seeks to control every aspect of it and make decisions from afar. The difference between our own economic system and those of true fascist states in the past is we have no one to loot but ourselves to sustain our way of life. We are trying to sustain ourselves by eating ourselves and wondering why things are falling apart.

Placing new fees and taxes on financials sounds like a common sense and fair solution for returning taxpayer money. The problem is, these fees will not be paid by some outside entity separate from the public. We are placing these fees on ourselves, at the expense of ourselves, with the belief that they are being levied on someone else. Small business will pay for these fees, individual account holders will pay for these fees, large corporations will pay for these fees and eventually customers will leave these institutions in favor of foreign financials making our investments worthless.

It will, for a very short time, seem like we are doing something just. That is morw important in an election year than actual achievement.

With panty bomber, Democrats still find way to blame Bush

This article at Politico is great. Democrats are whining because Obama is receiving criticism over the massive panty bomber failure that Bush did not receive with the shoe bomber. Let me explain reality for them.

1) The shoe bomber wasn’t on a terror list, being investigated by the CIA, and have his FATHER turning him in well ahead of time, all with seemingly no action taken to stop him.

2) Bush’s Homeland Security secretary did not say “The system worked!!! No larger issue here!”

3) No one questioned Bush/Cheney commitment to killing terrorists. Obama can barely say terrorist without gulping back an obvious hatred of America.

4) Bush hadn’t just finished a whistle stop “I apologize for America, what can we do to appease you” tour of the world.

Yes Obama is going to be questioned more on his commitment to War. In the same way, Bush was always questioned more on his commitment to peace. The left and the media could never believe Bush was out for a true altruistic goal, but it is always just assumed with Obama. The reverse is true with Obama, his commitment to War and defense will always be challenged until he changes his rhetoric OR does something.

Obama created the image of himself as peaceful savior, now he has to live with it just as Bush created the image of War ready commander. If Democrats want to end the perception they are soft on crime and terror, they need to stop being so.

Stop the insanity!

So let me get this straight, the Government manages multiple lists of terror suspects. One list is a no-fly list but you can be a terror suspect but not make this list, even though terrorists keep targeting flights and keep TELLING us they are on their way.

We seem to have no idea how these lists are managed so the White House has ordered a top to bottom review. This review is going to be conducted by the same worthless people who have run our intelligence capabilities into the ground and bankrupted the country. So, yeah, that will work.

Here is the thing, our government cannot manage two lists simultaneously but they want to manage health care. Seriously, they think they can manage health care and digital medical records, but they cannot manage two lists with a just a few hundred thousand names on it.

What in the hell is happening in this country? Our government cannot do anything right and yet we keep giving them more to do!

Hillary Clinton & Oprah are fat & eating less while working out, not government, is the solution

Remember how a few years ago, anorexia and bulimia were destroying the lives of America’s youth? Yeah I do too, there was a time when you couldn’t avoid hearing about how female “body image” was being distorted by attractive people on television and in print advertising. Young women, en mass, were apparently racing to the bathroom to puke away a delicious meal or two.

Yes there were and are women, especially some young women, who are being ravished by terrible psychological problems and hard to deal with issues surrounding their self image. For them I feel and hope they seek and find help. There is a difference between a minority of our population suffering from something that needs real assistance and a public relations campaign forged by academics and snake oil salesman creating a media driven sense of epidemic. The craze over people who were too thin was just a craze, not unlike Y2K or Africanized Killer Bees.

Do you know how I always knew there was no mass issue with bulimia and anorexia striking American youth and destroying our nation from the inside? I have eyes and I shop at malls. While the extreme anti-female-left was pushing this notion, I could see with my own eyes that the majority of people around me, including young girls, were getting fatter and fatter. If there was an epidemic of people experiencing extreme weight loss, it sure wasn’t happening outside of JC Penny’s and definitely not Wal-Mart.

You almost never hear about anorexia or bulimia anymore. I believe that is because common sense has set in. In place of extreme weight loss fears, we are now in the midsts of a massive media campaign declaring obesity the number one problem with America. Liberals, out of nowhere, must have found the right prescription glasses, looked around the classroom and realized young girls and the rest of the population were not wasting away, they were gorging themselves on all they could find.

Obesity has become a major concern of the far left. Just as interest groups were birthed and spread throughout the 80’s and 90’s because of the belief the planet was going to get so hot that the world would explode, lefty groups now appear to be on a crusade to tie obesity to the extinction of the human species, the destruction of Health Care and yes, even global warming. Oy, do we not learn our lessons?

I have to say, I could care less about obesity. Will millions die as a result? Sure, but that is not my problem. Millions of people will also die from a plethora of other things. I will never, in my life, jump out of an airplane for recreation. If someone does and they die, not my problem and if a hundred people did it, that still doesn’t make it a concern of the federal government. If people choose to eat until their heart explodes, I don’t really care, that is their right. If they want to spend their money becoming obese, have at it. Liberty isn’t always pretty.

The new argument is that health care costs are spiraling out of control because of obesity. There is endless research making this connection and it became the cornerstone of many of the 2008 candidates health care proposals and will surely be part of the health care solutions coming out of the Congress. That is all well and good, I actually believe health care costs are rising because of obesity and other lifestyle choices. I also know, most of the people pushing the plans and vilifying restaurants and food producers, are fat.

Hillary Clinton is FatHillary Clinton’s plan in 2008 was loaded with ideas about how to make America healthy. Hillary Clinton is fat. Hillary actually got fatter during the campaign while she was out talking about her proposals. The woman has millions of dollars and a team of people working on her. She can afford the healthiest food and have someone prepare it for her. She has no problem preaching to others about lifestyle, yet her ass is enormous.

It isn’t just a Democrat thing either. Mike Huckabee LOVES to talk about the weight he lost and the virtues of personal responsibility leading to savings for society. I have news, Mike Huckabee is ENORMOUS again. The guy has a TV show and apparently has decided the money he makes from it is best spent binge eating. If Huckabee wants to talk about how to not stay thin, great, otherwise I have no interest.

They aren’t the only ones. Every other week it seems Oprah does a show about weight loss and has been the public face for this growing media campaign. Oprah is gigantic. A billionaire with all of her money riding on self improvement, she cannot wait to let her audience know they have a problem. She is the one with the problem. Any woman taking diet tips from Oprah needs to have her head examined.

Have you looked at most of the members of Congress pushing Health Care reform? Fat! Michael Moore made a movie about the high cost of health care. He must have run across some of this amazing research linking obesity to the high cost of care. Michael Moore, even with supposedly losing weight, is gigantic.

One of the new trends is to attempt a ban on trans fats and taxes for fatty foods. I honestly think the Oprah’s and Hillary Clinton’s of the world can only be skinny if such a stupid and useless ban or heavy tax existed. It appears to me that to keep Oprah skinny, we would have to remove from the planet, every non-vegetable and fruit and turn our streets into treadmills she could not avoid.

At the end of the day, I don’t care if Hillary Clinton or Oprah or Michael Moore are fat and not giving up a few meals to feed starving people in Uganda. They, however, care that everyone else is. Hypocrites.

If you believe in human evolution, you should recognize that over time, species either adapt or they die. This is supposedly the root of all evolutionary history. If you know how the heart and the human body work, you also know that our great ancestors would have had to face enormous obstacles in conditioning their organs to move out of the oceans and eventually walk on two legs. Pushing against the force of gravity, they managed to become stronger and adapt. Their bodies changed and things worked out.

Our bodies are either going to adapt to being gigantic or die. If human internal organs cannot figure out how to handle a Snickers bar properly over the next few hundred years, we might as well become extinct. Like all things liberals worry about, massive government action is not the answer. Time, nature, and a little common sense will prevail. Healthy doses of shame from skinny good looking people is actually part of the solution too, not the problem.

I believe Liberals were smart to wrap their distaste for a heavier population to the rising cost of health care and not spend their time actually solving their own weight problems. As a conservative, I completely agree with the notion that a lack of personal responsibility is leading to problems in our society. However, if you follow a logical and Constitutional line of thought, you would never arise at government bans, taxes and of course socialized medicine.

The logical thing to do would be to charge people who have excessive weight issues more money for things like health care. Somehow this seems to escape the liberal mind. If everyone enjoys foods with trans fats, but a percentage of the population abuses them, why charge everyone more? Additionally, why make the entire population pay the medical bills that come from this abusive population when the smaller population should be paying less? If obesity is a problem you wish to solve, this line of thought actually makes things worse because it removes consequences from the very obese.

Additionally, giving obese people who are denied or cannot afford the high cost of regular medical insurance a government run medical insurance plan, is counterproductive. The socialist notion that the strong must pay more to save the weak is the problem. Like all liberal plans, their solutions to obesity punishes everyone, to save no one, while hurting the people who make good choices.

In the end obesity will work itself out or it won’t. All of the money and time wasted to hunt this media driven epidemic will only make things worse. Is obesity a problem? Yes, for the obese. Has it become a problem for everyone else? Yes, because we all have to pay for their poor choices. So will a solution whereby everyone is punished and taxed and forced to provide for the obese, solve the problem? No, it will only make things worse.

There is one solution to obesity, eat less and work out more and society cannot do that for the obese.
