2012 Republican Candidate Tim Pawlenty
Former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty formed a Presidential Exploratory Committee on March 21, 2011 and participated in the first Republican 2012 primary debate in May 2011. On May 23, 2011, Pawlenty officially announced his candidacy. In August 2011 Pawlenty announced he would no longer be a presidential candidate for 2012 and ended his campaign. He gave his support to rival Mitt Romney.
History
Born November 27, 1960 Tim Pawlenty was raised in St. Paul, Minnesota. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Minnesota and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1986.
Pawlenty worked as a labor law attorney and later became vice president of a software company, Wizmo Inc.
Elected and Political Experience
Pawlenty was appointed to the Eagan, Minnesota City Planning Commission in 1988 and was elected to city council in 1989. He was a campaign aid for John Grunsenth’s losing bid for Governor. Pawlenty was then elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1992. He was reelected four times and became House Majority Leader in 1998.
Pawlenty became Minnesota governor in 2002. He was reelected in 2006.
In 2008 he became cochairman of John McCain’s presidential campaign.
